The male American goldfinch is the only finch that moults twice a year. The male goldfinches' bright yellow feathers become a sign of oncoming warmer weather.
The brown-headed cowbird, a brood parasite, sometimes lays its eggs in a goldfinch nest. However, as the goldfinch is a vegetarian and only feeds its young with seeds, the brood parasite young do not survive.
