Description

Article no.: WG4803

The red-browed finch is an Australian bird easily recognizable by its red beak and the bright red colouring around its eyes and tail. They are usually seen searching for food on the ground in flocks of about 10. The red-browed finch is frequently seen with the superb fairy wren, which is interesting since their song is quite similar. The red-browed finch builds a large, domed nest with an entrance tunnel on the side about 1-2 metres above the ground.

The adult birds build the nest together and also take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks. The young birds are entirely independent within four weeks, so the adults can have 2-3 clutches in one season.
