The house finch, who is native to western North America, was introduced to the east coast when it was released from pet stores in New York. It then rapidly proceeded to spread across eastern North America. The house finch lives on a diet of berries and seeds supplemented with buds and flowers during spring. The male has beautiful red markings on his head, chest and upper rump. The red pigment comes from his food and becomes more intense the richer his diet is in special berries.
