The mallard hen is brown speckled and not as easily recognisable as the mallard drake. The beak is a stronger orange colour. The young mallards look like an adult hen. Both the hen and the drake have the bright blue speculum which is visible when they spread their wings.
The female mallard is easy to mistake for females of other duck species such as the teal (the teal is much smaller).
The female is more vocal than the male, and has a deep quack, while the male has a softer, raspier sound.
Mallards can become quite tame. It is not uncommon for them to eat out of your hand when fed appropriate food such as corn, seeds and peas. The mallard often visits urban areas, and can be found near water: lakes, parks, and the sea.
We design our DecoBirds with expert advice from ornithologists, in order to make them realistic.
