The African buffalo is as large as an ox and weighs up to 800kg. They are one of the most common herbivores in Africa, found on grasslands, coastal savannahs, in the bush and even the rainforest - as long as there is water. Living in herds ranging from a couple of hundred to several thousands, their numbers depend largely upon food availability however they are also preyed upon by lions. When attacked, buffalos will rush to protect each other.
