The common eland has a shoulder height of about 1.5 meters. They live in herds of about 40-70 individuals throughout southern Africa and the herd collective protects the young from predators such as lions. The common eland is an herbivore and lives in open grasslands, savannahs, and forests. Though both the male and female have long spiralling horns the females? horns are longer and more delicate than the males. When the eland walks its hooves make a distinctive clicking sound.
